Jim Krueger - Sweet Salvation

Jim Krueger's Sweet Salavation

Jim Krueger was a close family friend until his untimely death in 1993. Jim moved to California with our family in the early '70s and played with my dad in both The Denis Guyer Band and Elvin Bishop before joining Dave Mason. Jim was notorious for scaring the living daylights out of my brothers and I when we were kids. During his years with Dave Mason, he wrote We Just Disagree, which is still heard daily on radio stations around the world. The music here is from Jim's solo album "Sweet Salvation" for Columbia Records + the song Words (The Words). Here are the songs, if you have more you would like to contribute, please upload the music and add a posting:

Dan Gunnip, I stumbled on to this site while trying to find ANY information about your band, Sister Sun, Which after about two hours of searching I’m happy to say I found playing in Stamford, and have been to see several times over the last three months. It was like old home week, and good for the soul. It was so good to see David and Diane and we had a nice talk about the old days. I was very sorry to hear that you were not playing with them any longer. I hope you’re still playing, at least for yourself. I don’t think you would remember me, but on one of your breaks one night you tried to show me how to play The Dutchman on the guitar. Man I used to ask you guys to play it every time I went to see you play. It was so good to hear your music again, I was able to get a CD from David and listen to it often. I can’t tell you how many times I tried to find out what ever happened to the band, I just lost track of you guys, but after twenty years I was overjoyed to have found it again. I just wanted you to know how much your music is loved and remembered by people out there. Do you ever sit in with the band when they play, I wish you would, it would be great to see you again. I will be in Stamford on the 28th at the L/R tavern to see the band, hope to see you there. If you would like to Email me, I would love to hear from you, I’m not a nut-job, just someone who loves good music. Clyde Baxter

Hi Mike, Just wanted to express my gratitude for making available one of the greatest albums (at least in my collection) online. I used to have two vinyl copies of Salvation but one got lost and the other was lent to someone year's ago and I can't remember who. I've been scorching the web for a couple of years now trying to locate a CD version of Salvation but as you will've guessed, to no avail. So today, I figured: "Ah, let's give a try" and bumped on your site to also find the entire album available and ready to download ... Jim's music not only warmed the hearts locally in the states... As a Westcoast music lover in the Netherlands, I can say that Jim stole hearts across the world! What a steady voice he has! He's one of the few singers that can hold a voice perfectly flat, yet full of feelings and seemingly effortless. I'm sad to read that he passed away; I didn't know. One of the most underrated musicians of his era and beyond!!

I first heard of Jim Krueger on a local FM Station, WPLR in New Haven, CT right when the Sweet Salvation was first released (must have been in the late 70's). I can still remember how the DJ introduced the album..."introducing the music of Jim Krueger". The played "Don't Call Me Chief". This song blew me away. I ran right down to Cutler's Record store in New Haven, and bought the album. I have played that album hundreds of times over the years, and it never fails to lift my spirts. I still have the album to this day. I was searching the web for a CD release of the album and learned that Jim passed away in 1993 (a terrible loss to the music world). I have spent hours online searching for information about Jim, and found this web site. For anyone looking to see Jim in concert, I recently searched YouTube.com and found an old Dave Mason concert with a few shots of Jim playing an acoustic guitar and singing background vocals. If anyone is interested in this video, do a search on YouTube for Dave Mason, We Just Disagree. Find the one that's from the 70's and you see a few clips of Jim. If anyone has any more information on Jim, please e-mail me at dougmusante@hotmail.com. Doug Musante - Shelton, CT

I was pleased to find this place. I'm from Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. Back in the early 80s I went on one of my record buying binges and came across Sweet Salvation. Reading the credits I saw Michael Omartian had produced the LP and since I had previously heard of Jim from the Dudek, Finnigan, Krueger Band and his work with Dave Mason, I took a chance on the album. I was pleasantly surprised to say the least. I eventually wore out my first copy and was lucky enough to find a second one. Sweet Salvation is one of the most underrated and overlooked albums of that period. My wife and I both fell in love with Jim's playing and voice. It was a favorite around the apartment and carried us through the move into our home in Dec 81. It remained a staple on our turntable until the damn thing broke in the early 90s. I always kept waiting for a follow up album but Omartian was busy collecting Grammys for his work with Christopher Cross and it seemed like Jim had disappeared of the face of the earth. When I had finally heard Jim had passed I was shocked and saddened. I kept waiting for a CD version of Sweet Salvation to appear but it never did. So thanks for these. I will treasure them and my wife will be so surprised to hear them after all this time. Thanks again. Richard

An exerpt from the Acoustic Fest / Jim Krueger Memorial Scholarship Fund Website

About Jim... Jim "Bruiser" Krueger was born and raised in Manitowoc. He was self taught starting with a ukelele and an accordion.

Heavily influenced by the folk movement of the early and mid 1960's, Jim became prolific on the 5-string banjo. The acoustic guitar was next, finally giving way to the electric, from the influence of Bob Dylan and the Beatles.

From 1967 to 1970, Jim was a member of the legendary group Grease. In 1971 Jim moved to San Francisco to join the nationally known AB Skhy Band.1973 was the first year Jim was recording on a major label with the Tim Weisberg/Dreamspeaker Album. That same year Jim joined Dave Mason's Band touring and recording on and off for the next 20 years. In 1976 Jim wrote and recorded Dave's biggest hit, "We Just Disagree," earning Jim's second gold album. The following year, Jim, Mike Finnigan and Les Dudek formed the DFK Band, also on Columbia Records. In the early '80's, Jim joined Mike Finnigan and the Right Band on the live TV concert show "Rock & Roll Tonite." Jim and the band backed up legendary artists Les Paul, Todd Rundgren, Steven Stills, Etta James, Ted Nugent, Paul Butterfield and the Band, along with their own material. In 1987, Jim moved back to Manitowoc, but continued to record and tour with Dave Mason. The local bands, the Traveling Kingsburys and the Normal Adults, were formed in 1991. Jim let everybody in on his fun, creating the Happy Schnapps Combo. Jim died in 1993, but his music was recorded by numerous artists including his boyhood idol, Bob Dylan. Jim's music lives on and as time goes by, seems to sound hipper and timeless with age.

I had the pleasure of being a guest of Michael Omartian when he was making the Sweet Salvation album with Jim Krueger. I went to the studio every night for more than a week and watched them make magic. Jim was a great talent and will be missed. I spoke to his brother Rich about 8 years ago and bought a cd of Sweet Salvation and some Happy Schnapps Combo cds. which were very entertaining and amusing. Be sure to hear "The Harley Davidson Polka" and " I don't wanna do dat" Jim was cool, friendly and an unbelievable guitarist ( just TRY and play some of his riffs. Hotnoggin country Raga........ for example... He was as good as they get. I miss you Jim, Thanks for the music and the memories.. PEACE....... Russell

I love Jim Krueger's music, and the seamless way he used lyrics to illustrate compelling emotions. My favorite song of all time is "The Words" as performed by Dave Mason on the 1978 album MARIPOSA DE ORO. A friend of mine, Rand Howells, (now deceased) first introduced me to it. Whenever I've gotten depressed about my writing career, I've played that song, reminding me that certain things aren't a career, they are a way of life. what is it like after Steinbeck/ do you worry about the things you miss/ well I do and I hurry/ like a fool from nine to five/ trying to keep my words alive.../ I never met Jim Krueger, nor ever saw him perform. He must have been very talented. The inspiration I've received from one piece of his music has helped sustain me through many unhappy moments. They can play "The Words" at my funeral. His song is a beautiful anthem for every lost and unsuccessful literary artist. Mike Bonner March 23, 2006 Eugene, Oregon
